The 1958 Newport Jazz Festival has taken on mythic status. Over those four days in July Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis, Chuck Berry, Dinah Washington, Gerry Mulligan, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Anita O’Day, George Shearing, Sonny Stitt, Chico Hamilton, and others played. That’s quite extraordinary, as is the fact that the event was so well documented. There were hundreds of feet of film shot, and filmmaker Bert Stern edited all of that down to 84 minutes of performances punctuated by the America’s Cup yacht race, which took place off the coast of Rhode Island at that same time. Plus, we have great CDs from the festival, especially Miles Davis’s Live at Newport 1958.
On Sunday, the last day of the festival, Mahalia Jackson, the greatest gospel singer ever, took the stage, and luckily her performance, too, was recorded and released later that year as Live at Newport 1958. The original performance was just over 45 minutes long, but the LP release was much shorter. With the CD release we get more, nine other songs (including a marvelous "Keep Your Hand on the Plow" with the Duke Ellington Orchestra), restoring the entire set. And thank the Lord, as Mahalia might say. From the moment Willis Condover introduces her, she sings as a woman convinced of her place in heaven, if not of her place in history.
It was a career come from heaven. Until 1948, she was singing in churches, but then she recorded a huge hit, "Movin’ on Up," for the Apollo label, and she was suddenly a star. She started appearing on Studs Terkel’s TV show in 1950, went on a European tour, and in 1954 started hosting her own CBS radio show. Then she caught the attention of legendary Columbia producer John Hammond, who signed her up and got her on Ed Sullivan.
Moving past 1958, she sang at the Kennedy inaugural, for the civil rights March on Washington, for Indira Gandhi, and at her friend Martin Luther King’s funeral. She died a few years later at the age of 61.
The best moment in this set, besides raucous renditions of "He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands," "When the Saints Go Marching In," and "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho," is when Jackson speaks to the audience just after her regular set ends and she is ready to launch into her encores. She leaves it up to the audience. "Now I don’t know if you want to hear me and want to stay in the rain," she says, "I’m just getting warmed up." The crowd (we now know a wet crowd) screams for more. "All right, you make me feel like a star."
This woman wasn’t just simply singing, as she proclaims in "I"m Goin’ to Live the Life I Sing About in My Song," one of the previously unissued tracks. She was truly humble, even as the most famous gospel singers of all time. This CD is one you’ll pull out of your collection as a surprise every time. Au cours de ces 4 jours de juillet ont joué : Thelonius MONK, Miles DAVIS, Chuck BERRY, Dinah WASHINGTON, Gerry MULLIGAN, Louis ARMSTRONG, Duke ELLINGTON, Anita O'DAY, George SHEARING, Sonny STITT, Chico HAMILTON, et autres. C'est tout à fait extraordinaire, comme cet événement est si bien documenté. Il y avait des kilomètres de film tourné, et le réalisateur Bert Stern a publié tout cela dans 84 minutes de concerts ponctués par la course de yacht de l'America Cup, qui a lieu au large de la côte de Rhode Island à la même époque. De plus, nous avons de grands CD du festival, surtout le "Live at Newport 1958" de Mile Davis .
Le dimanche, dernier jour du festival, Mahalia JACKSON, la plus grande chanteuse de gospel à jamais, est montée sur scène, et heureusement sa prestation, aussi, a été enregistrée et publiée plus tard cette année-là dans «Live at Newport 1958». Le concert original durait 45 minutes, mais le disque LP réalisé était plus court . Avec la version CD on obtient plus, 9 autres chants (comprenant "Keep your hand on the plow" avec le Duke Ellington Orchestra), restituant l'ensemble. Et merci mon Dieu, comme Mahalia aurait pu le dire. A partir du moment où Willis Condover la présente, elle chante comme une femme convaincue de sa place dans les cieux, si ce n'est de sa place dans l'histoire.
C'était une carrière venant des cieux. Jusqu'en 1948, elle chantait dans les églises, mais alors elle a enregistré un énorme succès, "Movin' on up", pour le label Apollo, et elle est soudain devenue une star. Elle dit à l'auditoire : «Maintenant, je ne sais pas si vous voulez m'écouter et voulez rester sous la pluie», dit-elle, «Je commence juste à m'échauffer». La foule (une foule mouillée, nous le savons maintenant) crie pour plus. «Très bien, vous me faites me sentir comme une star».
Cette femme n'était pas simplement entrain de chanter, comme elle le déclare dans "I'm goin' to live the life I sing about in my song", l'un de ses titres inédits. Elle était vraiment humble, alors même qu'elle était la plus grande chanteuse de gospel de tous les temps. Ce CD est celui que vous sortirez de votre collection comme une surprise à chaque fois. It was 1958 at the Newport Jazz Festival, and the announcer said it all: "Ladies and gentlemen, it is Sunday, and it is time for the World's Greatest Gospel Singer, Miss Mahalia Jackson." And, with that all-too-appropriate introduction, Jackson broke into a stirring rendition of "An Evening Prayer" that set the tone for a classic performance. Over the course of her 45-minute set, she performed pop-tinged numbers ("Didn't It Rain"), a few trad tunes ("I'm Going to Live the Life I Sing About in My Song"), and songs immersed with soul ("Keep Your Hand on the Plow"). On all of these numbers, Jackson's voice rang loud and clear, backed simply by piano and organ. Recorded at a time when her longtime fans were questioning her increasing fame and popularity, the "Queen of Gospel" proved shiningly, once again, that she still knew how to use her God-given gift of voice.       ~ Jason Verlinde

Et, avec cette présentation tout à fait appropriée, Jackson a fait son entrée dans une interprétation émouvante de "An evening prayer" qui a donné le ton d'un spectacle classique. Au cours des 45 minutes, elle a interprété des titres teintés de pop ("Didn't it rain"), quelques airs traditonnels ("I'm going to live the life I sing about in my song"), et des chants imprégnés de soul ("Keep your hand on the plow"). Sur l'ensemble de ces morceaux, la voix de Jackson sonnait haut et fort, soutenue par simplement piano et orgue. Enregistré à une époque où ses fans de longue date s'interrogeaient sur sa notoriété grandissante et sa popularité, la "Reine du Gospel" a prouvé brillamment, une fois de plus, qu'elle savait encore comment se servir de sa voix "don de Dieu".
