«IN MY HOME OVER THERE», a collection of early recordings by Mahalia Jackson, finds the Queen of Gospel full of youthful energy and exuberance, sounding as masterful and passionate as she does on her later, better-known albums. Since the recordings are remastered from surviving 78s, there is some sound aberration, but the power of Jackson's performances cut right through any existing pops and crackles.
The material, too, stacks up against any in her repertoire, with numerous originals by Bobby Smith (including the moving "His Eye Is On the Sparrow") and Jackson herself (the gorgeous "In the Upper Room" and the rousing "Dig a Little Deeper"). Songs that became part of the gospel canon, thanks--in part--to Jackson's renditions, are here, including "Nobody Knows" and a dazzling arrangement of "Amazing Grace." Though more deeply rooted in the gospel tradition (Jackson's later work would show more of a pop sensibility), there is still a deep bluesy feel here that lends an edge to these uplifting spiritual airs. These 12 tracks are a definitive glimpse of this magnificent vocalist in her youth.

There are only two minor negative factors about this collection of early recordings by the Queen of Gospel. The exacet recording dates are not listed. Also, only the first part of "In the Upper Room" is included despite the fact that the song consists of two parts. Everything else, however, is so amazing, including her versions of the gospel standards "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" and "Amazing Grace" as well as the title track "In My Home over There" and a rather blusy "There's Not a Friend Like Jesus".                                                   ~ Pick of the Month: March, 2001 - Jaspella Gospel Guide.
