Album notes : These Apollo sessions are early and choice Mahalia Jackson performances (including the original "Didn't It Rain" and "Move On Up A Little Higher"). What is apparent is not only how much she sounds like her model, the grand Bessie Smith, but also how funky and rhythmically supple she is, much like Ma Rainey, who was even more profane than Bessie, let alone Mahalia Jackson!
